Below are the Laxmi Puja vidhi steps to be followed  to worship Goddess Laxmi on Diwali occasion.

Purification of the house (pooja place)

Clean the house properly by sprinkling Gomutra (Cow Urine) and/or Gangajal. This will help purify the house or place of pooja.

Setting up the pooja platform (pooja paat)

Take the Pooja Paat (Chaurang) i.e. a raised platform and clean it properly. Put some handful of grains like wheat in the center of the platform.

Placing of the kalash (Copper round Pot, tambya or lota)

Now we need to place the kalash (tambya or lota) on the rice (grains) put in the center on the platform. Fill the kalash with up to 75% of water and put in 1 supari, 1 marigold flower, a coin and also some rice. Then put and arrange five mango leaves around the neck of the kalash in circular fashion.

Placing of Goddess Laxmi Idol

First put an appropriate size Pooja thali on top of the kalash. Then make a mountain of rice grains in the middle of the thali. Now draw a lotus or swastika over it using turmeric powder (haldi) and place the idol of Laxmi Mata in the center.

Placing of Idol of Ganesha (Our beloved Ganapati Bappa)

Ganesha bhagwan (our beloved Ganapati Bappa) is given the first pooja importance in every pooja. So put the idol of Lord Ganesha on the right side i.e. ideally the South-west direction assuming we are performing Pooja in conventional and most preferred East-West direction. Then apply a haldi-kumkum tilak on the forehead of Ganesha. Therefore, on the right side (South-West direction) of the kalash, place the idol of Ganesha. Apply a tilak of haldi and kumkum. Put some rice grains on the idol. Light a diya in front of the Lord Ganesha to seek his blessing for successful completion of Laxmi Pooja.

Placing of books of business and/or wealth related items

Now place the books of business and/or anything related to the wealth besides the arrangement.

Lighting of diya

Light a diya preferably a panch mukhi diya (oil lamp with 5 wicks) and place it in a thali along with some haldi, kumkum and rice grains. One can also put sandalwood and/or saffron paste, abeer and gulal.
Starting with the pooja and aarti.

Start the pooja first with kalash poojan by applying tilak to the kalash. Apply the same to the lota that is filled with water. Then offer flowers to Ganeshji, books, kalash etc.

Recite Diwali Puja mantra

Take some rice and flowers in your hand and then fold your hands together and with closed eyes, recite the Diwali pooja mantra of goddess Laxmi. One can even simply chant Lakshi mata’s name and also try to meditate for couple of minutes to invite her to visit your place and bless you.

Offering the flower

Offer the flower and rice to the Goddess Lakshi once again after the prayer is completed.

Giving Abhishek to the idol of Goddess Laxmi

Now pick up the idol of Goddess Laxmi and place it in a thali. Bathe it with water and then followed by panchamrita abhishek. Clean the idol with water again. Wipe the Laxmi idol and place it on the kalash again.

Putting the garland around the neck of the Goddess

Apply haldi and kumkum along with the rice to the idol. Place the garland made of cotton beads around the neck of the Laxmi Mata. offer marigold flowers and Bel leaves to Goddess. Burn agarbattis and dhoop.

Offering sweets & coconut

Offer coconut and place a supari on a supari leaf. Now put some haldi, kumkum and rice over it. Offer some puffed rice, coriander seeds and cumin seeds to the idol. Place some mithai, Diwali sweets, fruits and money or gold ornaments in front of it.
